The International Union of Architects (UIA) was founded in Lausanne, Switzerland on June 28th 1948 to unite the architects of the world through a federation of their national organizations. From the 27 delegations present at the founding assembly, the UIA has grown to encompass the key professional organisations and architects in 115 countries and territories.
The UIA is a non-governmental organisation recognized by UNESCO as the only architectural union operating at an international level. It acts as a platform for knowledge sharing, helping craft innovative and collaborative solutions for architectural advancement, with a particular focus on sustainability in the built environment.
The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan is the oldest creative association formed on the basis of common interests of people engaged in professional architectural activity.
The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan was founded in 1934 on the initiative of a group of Azerbaijani masters. The first congress of Azerbaijani architects was held by the Organizing Committee in March 1936, where the Board of Directors of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan was elected, and the functions and principles of the Union were defined.
The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan fosters the growth of architects' creativity, advocates their talents and identity, protects their copyright, and promotes their achievements through competitions and exhibitions throughout the world. The activity of the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan is of great importance for the promotion of Azerbaijani architecture, preservation of the national architectural heritage, and the recognition of our architects in the world.
Today, several regional architectural organizations are functioning within the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan. As a professional creative organization, the Union of Architects focuses on increasing the efficiency of all areas of architectural profession, developing architecture and urban development, strengthening international co-operation, and developing national culture.
The Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, as a member of the International Union of Architects, represents Azerbaijani architects at numerous international forums and congresses. Biennially, the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan, with the support of the International Union of Architects, hosts the Baku International Architectural Award, and every year a review contest of works by young architects and students is held.
Together with its creative committees and professional ethics board, the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan helps in finding innovative solutions aimed at the continuous development of architecture through the exchange of professional architectural knowledge and skills.
